Harbours Review Spotlight: Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Shipping

The seminar is aimed at assessing the situation following IMO’s decision to cut GHG emissions from shipping by 50% until the year 2050. This goal, viewed by some as highly achievable and highly ambitious by others, will definitely have an impact on the maritime industry.

A deep analysis will set the ground for recommendations aimed at helping shipowners prepare for achieving the goal of decarbonization. Instead of just listing what needs to be done, the seminar will also present a set of tools, such as innovative technologies and cooperation opportunities, which will help shipowners to successfully cut emissions.

Course: Presentations that Persuade and Convince

In your presentations do your audiences always do what you want them to do?

This presenting workshop is different. It is specially designed for people who need to convince or persuade different audiences, whether this is to get the client to move to the next stage, to convince a group of internal stakeholders or just be more persuasive.

Audiences are time short and information rich however many technical presentations continue to just inform. They rarely persuade an audience to act or make a commitment to something.

If you have ever got to the end of your presentation and asked the usual “are there any questions?” and the audience has looked at you blankly, then you probably have just informed them but not convinced them.

If you want to make sure that this doesn’t happen, and you want your audience to be convinced, then you should attend this workshop!

Nudging in the maritime business

The event will begin with a brief introduction to nudge and nudging. Here we will answer questions like what is a nudge? Why do we even need nudges? How do they work? The answer will be given through a range of colourful examples. The aim is to introduce and inspire the participants.

In several industries nudging has become a desired method for behaviour change. In 2017, OECD announced that nudging ‘was here to stay’ - read more. Some reasons for why nudging has become so popular is because of it’s effectiveness, ease of implementation and ethical interventions. But how about nudging in the maritime business? Does it work? We take a closer look at what works and what doesn’t, as well as talk about the possible future of nudging in the area.

Finally, the participants will be encouraged to share their own challenges before the event. Cases shared may be discussed and the participants will have the opportunity to work on their case with simply tools from a nudgers toolbox.

We look forward to share our insights with you!

Program:

Introduktion to nudging, nudges and how to work with creating a safety culture?

Kulturforskelle i arbejdet

Cyber security - threat, trends and employee awareness

How can your organization prepare for the constant changing cyber threat? The circumstances are changing, and the biggest risk right now is the employee behind the screen. Get updated on the latest cyber threats and trends.

Cooperation between the IT organization and the business is vital, and we will look into how they can support each other and which campaigns on user behavior to use. Can e.g. nudging influence cyber behavior?

Learn why everyone must become aware of at least the basics on cyber security. This is the key to building up a threat intelligence to ensure that everyone, despite their different IT savviness, understands their role and the responsibility they hold to secure systems and data.

Cyber security is no longer just the focus of IT organizations. Threats are looming and ultimately you can lose money and customers. A new mindset in the boardroom can secure an increase in IT budgets. Depending on your budget, it can either improve or impair the infrastructure of keeping away malicious individuals.

SPEAKERS

Jens Monrad, Principal Intelligence Analyst, FireEye: As a frequent speaker, intelligence expert and analyst with 18 years of experience within IT security, Jens will provide us with a strategic risk analysis of the general threat landscape in EMEA and how it affects the risk of cyberattacks from nation-state actors to opportunistically driven cyber criminals.

Ken Munro, Partner, Pen Test Partners: Being a specialist in maritime security and IoT in general, Ken is an obvious candidate to explain the sometimes overlooked risk that comes with the digital age in the maritime industry. Ken is a strong advocate of responsible disclosure and regularly researches and reveals security vulnerabilities in an effort to promote better security design and practice.

Kasper Hulgaard, Behavioural Consultant, INudgeYou: Can nudging be a new way of positive reinforcement  and indirect suggestions as ways to influence cyber behavior of employees? Can you expand the understanding of risk and how should we communicate it?

Moderator: Lars Jensen, CEO & Partner, SeaIntelligence Consulting

VPO Forum Copenhagen

How to tactically ensure your fleets' optimum efficiency

VPO is returning to Copenhagen on 31 October 2018. Shipowners, operators, managers, charter parties and many other industry players will meet to discuss how the real challenges that lie in optimising a vessel’s performance can be met.

The 2020 global 0.5 per cent sulphur-in-fuel-oil cap is expected to cause fluctuations in fuel prices. The terms low and high sulphur fuel may not mean what they do today as an increasing number of fuel blends enter the market to meet demand for compliant fuel. Shipowners and operators will face an abundance of technologies that promise to cut fuel consumption and assist with regulatory compliance as they seek to find the best solution for their operations.

The design of ships is also changing to accommodate for increasing fuel prices. Designers are integrating complex systems to monitor vessel performance and technologies to meet regulatory requirements. The number of LNG-fuelled ships on order is at all all-time high and new designs are being sought to improve the cargo carrying efficiency of designs that utilise alternative fuels such as LNG and methanol.

The human factor is a vital part of operational efficiency, but it is often overlooked. More technologies are being installed on ships to meet regulation and improve ship performance, creating additional pressure on ships’ crews to efficiently operate new technology or fuels, sometimes with little training. The question is, do users have the right skills to operate these technologies at maximum efficiency? This forum will present the opportunity to discuss how the industry can ensure the regulatory and technology demands of a future shipping industry can be met.

VPO Copenhagen 2018 will consist of three key sessions to identify and discuss the approaches to designing, operating, and managing more efficient ships.

Facing the new HR value streams in the maritime industry

At every scale of HRM: from how we recruit, how we work, engage and collaborate, to how we build talent, form teams and involve the best competences, maritime companies are considering how to build the strongest organization possible.

However, some of the more recent challenges of the industry and requirements for even more flexibility makes it important for us to reemphasize and optimize our HRM practices.

The maritime industry asks for new, innovative playgrounds, for new ways of attracting skilled and flexible both men and women, and for ways to deliver business goals in sustainable value streams and relations.

At this event, we will explore both academic theories and hard-core facts and numbers presented in a line of inspirational talks and interactions from a Ph.D., a maritime HR responsible, a related industry partner, and a digital developer.

We hope that the afternoon will bring new perspectives and insights, which can help us all transform the maritime labour market from being a rather internal and hierarchical labour market to a more externally oriented and open labour market with possibilities for new career paths, other views of talent and more ways to build competencies.

Will new digital HR platforms and automation change the way we find talent, set teams and exchange and in what areas will we encounter the most significant changes - tomorrow and in ten years?

SPEAKERS

  • “Future careers and labour markets from a research perspective”
