In many shipping companies, ICT investments and operational costs are considered to be strictly budgeted and controlled, particularly when applied to ships’ infrastructure.
And on shore, many aspects and investments in ICT and digitalisation are still seen as “necessary evil” expenses.
But how can you drive without a road? Innovation frequently comes from unexpected places and comes easier when the necessary infrastructure exists. As an analogy, without roads, electricity, water, etc. it would hard to imagine many developments taking place.
How can we change this paradigm in shipping? How can we map the value of ICT infrastructure and systems with direct impact on both the bottom and top lines? What can we learn from different industries, where ICT infrastructure is already a commodity and innovation/digitalisation can be fully explored?
