Value Drivers – What is the business value of IT investments on ships?

In many shipping companies, ICT investments and operational costs are considered to be strictly budgeted and controlled, particularly when applied to ships’ infrastructure.

And on shore, many aspects and investments in ICT and digitalisation are still seen as “necessary evil” expenses.

But how can you drive without a road? Innovation frequently comes from unexpected places and comes easier when the necessary infrastructure exists. As an analogy, without roads, electricity, water, etc. it would hard to imagine many developments taking place.

How can we change this paradigm in shipping? How can we map the value of ICT infrastructure and systems with direct impact on both the bottom and top lines? What can we learn from different industries, where ICT infrastructure is already a commodity and innovation/digitalisation can be fully explored?

iShipping Copenhagen 2019

iShipping, to Digital Ship, means making the best possible use of data and digital technology to make the shipping industry operate as safely and efficiently, with the best possible quality of life of people involved, as we possibly can.

Data is not the “new oil” (or the “new shipping”) But better use of digital technologies can improve its contribution to efficiency and safety, and in a world of fine margins, that can mean the critical difference between survival and failure.

By iShipping we mean the right piece of data in the right place at the right time to support decision making, helping us run our vessels as efficiently and safely as possible, giving us fast access to the right expert in the event of any problem, and getting that expert the right data to help them resolve it.

Efficiency and safety involves increasingly high levels of vessel performance, improving maintenance and purchasing strategies, being fully prepared for vetting inspections, and making the right decisions about crewing, new builds, equipment and scrapping. It means making sure seafarers and superintendents have the right understanding of what is going on, both from their training and from the information that is given to them. It means people feeling clear about what is expected from them, rather than overloaded by information.

Delivering digital systems which provide this is an enormous technical and organisational challenge, requiring empathy, extensive modelling of what the organisation does and the people do. Technically it requires the most we can get from our satcom, software systems, e-navigation systems and other electronics. It also involves a lot of communications.

Getting this right is what we call ‘i-Shipping’. At our 3rd iShipping Copenhagen on 5 September 2019, we’ll learn more what is required to deliver true iShipping and create the best shipping industry that we are capable of.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Digitalisation – how should shipping companies determine how best to allocate their resources?

  • Satellite communications – which services have the most to offer a shipping company and how should they choose?

  • Cybersecurity – what are the best practical steps a shipping company can take to maximising it?

  • Data integration and sharing – how can a shipping company get more value from their data through better sharing?

Get into the booming business of China

For several decades the West has driven the global economic agendas, set the political and legal standards and dominated the technology and innovation space. Increasingly, we move towards a world where sham democracy is the new global norm, where the East rises above Western dominance, where proponents of globalisation and free trade close in on themselves.

Is the increasing dominance of Asia a threat or an opportunity? And can the global trade and the maritime sector benefit from this?

An expert in Chinese economy, politics and business and a futurist will each give their point of view of expected future of China kickstarting the panel debate.

Route Optimization

Determining the optimal voyage from A to B is not a trivial task when the voyage is influenced by varying wind, wave and current conditions and varying ship performance.

During the last couple of years state-of-the-art for route optimization has been pushed forward by including very advanced features in the route planning systems like e.g. adaptive self-tuning ship performance models (based on Digital Twins, AI and Machine Learning concepts), and rational handling and communication of uncertainties on weather forecasts.

A small network group under the Transport Innovation Network has worked together to stimulate mutual inspiration to further optimise route planning. Insights and results from this work will be presented during this event.

How shall the maritime industry reach the ambitious targets of IMO?

In April 2018, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) approved a historical strategy for CO2 and other GHG´s from shipping.

The strategy includes concrete reduction targets for the sector and requires shipping to reduce CO2 emissions per transport work, as an average across international shipping, by at least 40% by 2030, pursuing efforts towards total 50% GHG reductions in 2050, compared to 2008.

Different stakeholders from the industry will give their view of how the targets can be reached by new technologies, new fuel types and engine technologies and new ways of ship operation or others means.

Læs mere i Havnelovsguiden her

Bemærk arrangementet vil være på dansk.

Imagine being a main engine - how should we treat you in 2020?

GET YOUR HANDS ON HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE 2020 GLOBAL CAP

The introduction of the global cap in 2020 puts limits to SOx emissions. Shipowners and operators need to prepare in a timely manner, in order to adhere to regulation, and to make sure the transition is done in a safe manner not affecting the vessels systems and operation.

With this workshop we want to invite technicians, superintendents, commercial operators, suppliers - and everybody else with interest in vessel maintenance and operation to go into the brain of a main engine to discuss and learn how to prepare for the global cap.

Initially we will get an overview: why the global cap? What regulations are implemented? And how are they implemented and enforced?

We will continue to look at the bunker side: what to expect from new qualities bunker blends, how should we prepare the vessel in terms of procedures and tanks - and not at least crew training.

Finally, we look at the engine side. What will the new fuels mean for our engines? How about cylinder- and lube oils, maintenance, adjustments etc.

We will wrap up with a Q&A session, which will be a forum for exchanges knowledge and experience as well as a possibility to use all the experts present from engine manufacturers, suppliers etc.

Come join us on a day where the focus is to share hands-on knowledge between people with a passion for vessel management and operation - to make sure that we prepare for the best possible global cap transition.

  • What are the lessons learned from SECA to the Global Sulphur Cap 2020?

Before the 0.1 % SECA was adopted in the Baltic and North Seas in 2015, there was great fear about the consequences. Since then, little knowledge has been created on the actual effect of SECA in terms of emissions, air quality, human health, and the shipping business.

The three years EnviSuM project has analysed the impacts of SECA. Soon the Global Sulphur Cap 2020 will enter into force. But what can we learn from SECA? Are there lessons to be learned from SECA to the Sulphur Cap? Join the debate in our final conference!

The target group is authorities, researchers, maritime organisations, policymakers, as well as companies that are interested in SECA, Global Sulphur Cap 2020, air emissions from shipping and the impact on health. Participation is free of charge.
