Sustainable Ship Management at sea - HR, crewing and communication

Danish Shipping and Ship Management Conferences have three main themes; People, Business and Technical. At these three days you will be able to get all the relevant issues and interesting topics incurred by the industries most competent professionals.

On the 6th of October we will focus on people. Increased safety, performance culture on board and the market driver can match for higher competitiveness. You will have opportunity to meet Vice President, Erik Carlsen from Clipper Group who will share some cases and best practices from Clipper. “We know that we have to approach safety with constructive advice and a logical tone - rather than a lifted finger or a raised voice. At Clipper we strive towards a work environment which facilitates knowledge sharing and communication. It is a culture where people are not only encouraged but also expected to share information that can benefit others. Moreover, it is an unambiguous culture where there is no doubt of what is considered acceptable or unacceptable behavior”, says Erik Carlsen. He will also talk about the importance of continuously training of crew through safety campaigns and seminars. “We wish to create a culture where everyone takes responsibility for the well-being of not only him- or herself, but also his/her colleagues”, says Erik Carlsen, Vice President, Head of Clipper Fleet Management.

After lunch you will be presented for various lectures that will focus on the maritime education, competence development and the needed requirement of the sailors, engineers and shipping people. This session will end with Chief Instructor Maritime, Karsten Lundsgaard Haegg from Maersk Training. The presentation will give examples of how the development has been seen at Maersk Training, from individual technical courses and leadership courses, towards mixed courses, using technical and soft skills in the same scenario to enhance safety and efficiency on-board vessels or installations.

Ship Management and crewing will be the last topic of the day and we are glad to present General Manager, Stig Holm from Thome Ship Management, who will focus on the historical perspective of Ship Management and on what basis Ship Management, was established on. This historical perspective and previous demands will be compared to todays new demands to the ship manager. In line with the new requirements to the ship manager, he will also look into the new vessel manager education both from a ship manager perspective, but not least from a ship owner perspective.

Technical and Nautical Ship Management

Danish Shipping and Ship Management Conferences have three main themes; People, Business and Technical. At these three days you will be able to get all the relevant issues and interesting topics incurred by the industries most competent professionals.

On the 8th of October we will focus on “Technical and Nautical Ship Management”. We are honored to welcome, CEO, Dr. Jerry Ng Kok Loon from Blue Ocean Solutions, who will tell us about “Emulsified fuel – Reliable evidence of improved fuel efficiency using online measurements. Even with the current low fuel prices, fuel cost is still a major component of the operating costs of ship-owners. This presentation will compare the online data logged by the latest PMI system of a MAN B&W 12K98-ME engine when combusting neat HFO and emulsified HFO with 12% water. The logged data showed evidence of improved combustion efficiency. Fuel savings of about 2.8% at 80-84% load was recorded. The author also shares his vast experiences on improving fuel efficiency using water-in-fuel emulsions with more than 10 emulsified fuel systems installed on various types of vessels. After lunch you will be presented for various lectures that will prepare you for new systems, rules and regulations, new innovation, ideas and business opportunities both for producers and ship-owners within the nautical and classification area.

One of the interesting topics will be presented by Head Office President and Managing Director, Pantelis Chinakis, INSB Classification Society. Their featured project is called “The floating Island presentation”. The structure has a 3.500 sq.m. flat surface and its built-up area will be 13500m2. It includes a five star hotel with 136 rooms and has a rooftop restaurant that can host 340 people. The structure’s main deck will be dedicated for events for up to 1150 people and will host also a swimming pool, nightclub, a spa, a gym, a VIP movie theater and a helipad. Technical wise, the structure is set to have (amongst other elements) excellent sea keeping & stability while due to its hybrid steel and fiberglass hull engineering shall ensure the necessitated structural strength but with less weight and better corrosion resistance plus it can relocate itself under its own power by use of four installed engines.

The last topic of the day is Maritime IT where the main focus will be opportunities and challenges within E-navigation, maritime cloud, vessel IT, and software within operation and chartering. Greg Wilkins, Global Director of Commercial Marine Solutions at Veson Nautical, the leading provider of commercial maritime software and services, with offices in London, Boston, and Singapore, will present “Data Convergence to Insight”, which will share transformative learnings from some of Veson’s latest projects with leading shipping companies. Learn how these companies are analyzing diverse commercial and technical data to gain better visibility and make better, faster decisions for their business.

Sustainable Commercial Shipping

Danish Shipping and Ship Management Conferences have three main themes; People, Business and Technical. At these three days you will be able to get all the relevant issues and interesting topics incurred by the industries most competent professionals.

On the 7th of October we will focus on business. Main focus will be on three sections; Broking/Chartering/Operation, Risk Management, Financing and Insurance. Ole Skatka Jensen, CEO, Marorka is one of the lectures who will present “How holistic performance management, involving everybody taking part in vessel operations, can minimize excess fuel consumption.” A case study of how one of Marorka customers introduced an inter-department vessel performance system. The system increased awareness of how energy savings can effect company financial results through online sharing of performance date from vessels and effective planning and execution of voyages.

After lunch we will continue with “Legal Risk Management in shipping” presented by Rune Aagaard, Partner, HD (R) from Focus Advokater. An effective and structured approach to legal risk management can contribute to a significant increase in the value of any enterprise – in particular within shipping given the volatility of markets (freight, vessel values, currencies, bunkers etc.). A sound legal risk management system will increase the strength of the enterprise, making it more attractive as an object of investment ultimatively leading to increased shareholder value. In Focus Advokater’s presentation they will look at how legal risk management can be integrated in the wider risk management framework of the enterprise, and a suggested practical approach for creating a legal risk management framework tailored to the enterprise. A framework for managing legal risks particular to shipping enterprises will need to take into account issues such as the corporate structure of the shipping industry, regulatory issues, contractual risks, litigation risks and documentary risks. They will look briefly at these issues as well.

As part of the last session, “Business - Financing & Insurance”, Helle Lehmann, Senior Vice President, Head of Skuld Copenhagen will present the topic “P&I Insurance and diversification”. Helle Lehmann will explain in more detail why diversification may be a future sensible route for some P&I clubs in order to continue to protect the ship-owners operating in generally complex market conditions and a challenging economic environment. There is a growing need to secure the financial strength of the clubs in a global environment, characterised by volatility in both the cost of claims and in the returns from the financial markets, and at the same time the P&I clubs face new increased capital requirements, following regulations being introduced in the marine insurance industry.

Ny kaptajn hos EMUC
