Day of the Seafarer is just around the corner and MDC is bringing the work and everyday life of seafarers to the general public to create awareness of what it means to work on a vessel in the maritime industry. With 360 degree video and Virtual Reality technology, we are bringing the restricted environments of the deck, engine room, bridge and the overall vessel experience to life through engaging and immersive storytelling.
Together with Clipper Group, we have produced a number of 360 Virtual Reality video experiences which will premiere during a public event at 'Fiskeri og Søfartsmuseet' in Esbjerg on 25 of June 2017 as part of IMO's awareness campaign 'Day of the Seafarer'. You can read more about our event here.
In order to tell the story of the seafarer - you need to be there - onboard! So that's what we did.
Get a glimpse of the voyage experience
Embark on the bulk carrier Clipper Lis on her voyage from Gibraltar to Uddevalla - 12 days and a lot of footage
Clipper Lis is a bulk carrier built in 2009 and part of Clipper Groups fleet of bulk and project vessels. The Virtual Reality 360 videos will give the audience access to the bridge and experience piloting through 'Den Svenske Skærgård'. Morning meeting in the engine control room, inspection of the 3 level deep engine room and experience raw engine performance in both video and sound. Get close to the action on deck when the anchor is dropped and during mourning procedure.
360-degree video can be
shot with a special lightweight camera and remote controlled
360 video can be viewed with or without a Virtual Reality headset - although headset is prefered
Experience the ambient sounds of the oceans along the European cost from the Atlantic, The English Channel, Bay of Biscay, North sea to the scenic 'Svenske Skærgård'.
The 360 video camera
captures everything it sees
Then you press record you gotta get out of the way or you'll be part of the scene
Being underway and getting to stare into the vast horizon and experience how the weather changes are kind of a thoughtful experience. It went from sunny skies to cloudy, rain to foggy to even foggier. Definitely something different from the familiar and mundane commute to and from the office.
Shooting 360 video is only the first step in a longer process
Captured video needs to be stitched together before it can be edited. Stitching combines the view of the two lens to one panoramic 360 perspective
After 10 days underway from the bottom of continental Europe to the middle of Scandinavia Clipper Lis made her berth in at Uddevalla terminal inside the 'Svenske Skærgård'. The discharging of 27.0000 tons chrome ore started not soon after and kept going for the next couple of days.
After 12 days it was time to disembark
Clipper Lis and her crew continues on and are now underway to Venezuela with a cargo of agricultural fertiziler
The finished 360 Virtual Reality video experiences will premiere at 'Day of the Seafarer' at 'Fiskeri og Søfartsmuseet' in Esbjerg the 25 of June. The videos will be made available online at a later date with an announcement in the MDC newsletter and on Social Media . See ya in Esbjerg.
MDC would like to thank Clipper Group for the collaboration and granting access. But most of all special thanks to Master Aleksandr and the crew of Clipper Lis for their patience and willingness to play along with our questions, requests, and fixing of broken equipment.
